September 12, 2012
ARDEN HILLS, Minn. - Melissa Burch had 16 kills while Kelly Heissel and Katie Wolfram had 15 apiece as St. Olaf outlasted Bethel in five sets -- winning the final set 20-18 -- in a MIAC volleyball match on Wednesday night at the Robertson Center.
The teams essentially traded points throughout the decisive fifth as the largest lead for either team was two. Bethel had match point twice, at 17-16 and 18-17, but the Royals had a pair of attacking erros. St. Olaf had match point three times, at 14-13 and 15-14 before capitalizing on back-to-back service aces by Kersten Bork for the win.
Bork had 52 set assists and seven kills for the Oles (3-7, 1-0 MIAC), who hit .207. Bethel was led by Caitie Helle's 14 kills. Burch hit .283 and Wolfram .289.
St. Olaf came-from-behind to win the first two sets, 25-19 and 25-20. Bethel then took the third set 25-19 and jumped to a 10-1 lead in the fourth and forced a fifth with a 25-16 decision.
St. Olaf will travel to Mount Vernon, Iowa for four non-conference matches this weekend. The Oles play back-to-back home MIAC matches next week with next Wednesday's meeting with Gustavus Adolphus and a Sept. 22 date with Hamline University.
