Volleyball loses in four to NWC, goes distance to edge UW-Platteville

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - The St. Olaf volleyball team lost a four-set match to Northwestern College before taking a five-set win from UW-Platteville in the first two rounds of the Cornell Classic on Friday afternoon.

Ari Carlson had 13 kills while hitting .379, but Northwestern defeated the Oles 17-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-17. Kendra Korporal had 16 kills to lead the Eagles (7-3).
St. Olaf raced to leads of 5-1 and 17-7 in the first set on the way to the 25-17 set win. The Oles led late in the second set, at 22-21, but Korporal had three kills in a 4-1 NWC run to finish the set.
St. Olaf def. UW-Platteville 3-2
St. Olaf won each of the first two sets -- 25-20 and 25-21 -- before UW-Platteville forced a fifth with 25-9 and 25-19 wins in the third and fourth.
In the decisive fifth, St. Olaf led 5-1 and 11-5 before UW-Platteville tied the set at 13-13. A kill by the Oles' Maggie Prunty and an attacking error gave St. Olaf the set and match.
Kelly Heissel had 13 kills and Prunty 11, while hitting .417, for St. Olaf in the win. Danielle Cushley had 27 kills on 61 swings for UW-Platteville.
