Schmiesing scores twice as Oles top Gustavus

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Jake Schmiesing caught a pair of 5-yard touchdown passes as St. Olaf defeated visiting Gustavus Adolphus College 17-14 in MIAC football action on Saturday.
Dan Dobson passed for 183 yards and two scores on 19-of-27 with one interception. On the ground, Michael Thai led the Oles with 84 yards on 15 carries.
For Gustavus (1-2, 0-2 MIAC), quarterback Muresuk Mena carried 24 times for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Jeffrey Dubose added 114 yards on 18 carries.
Schmiesings's first score, with 1:20 remaining in the first quarter, gave the Oles (3-1, 1-1 MIAC) a lead they would not surrender all afternoon. Schmiesing finished the game with four catches for 32 yards.
Defensively, St. Olaf recorded two fumble recoveries and an interception in addition to making a goal line stand that held Gustavus scoreless going into the half. Leading the way was Ben Dobson, who had 7.5 tackles (four unassisted) and forced a fumble.
Mena brought the Gusties within three with a 58-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter, but the Oles recovered the subsequent onside kick and ran out the clock to seal the homecoming victory.
Lucas Wainman added a 24-yard St. Olaf field goal in the fourth quarter to give the Oles a 17-7 advantage.
The Oles travel to Collegeville to face Saint John's next Saturday.
