October 13, 2012
NORTHFIELD, Minn.- The St. Olaf men's soccer team scored two goals in each half in a 4-0 MIAC win over Macalester on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
Ryan Johnsrud and Kevin Skrip scored before the break and David Rosenthal added two in the second half, as St. Olaf controlled the game throughout. The Oles outshot the Scots 22-5 in the win.
Johnsrud got the scoring started in the 25th minute with his fifth goal of the season. Rosenthal fed Johnsrud at the top of the box and Johnsrud fired a right-footed shot off the underside of the bar and in to give St. Olaf the lead.
Ten minutes later, the Oles made it 2-0 courtesy of Skrip's fourth goal for St. Olaf. Skrip dribbled in from the left and scored on a low shot from the middle of the box. Skrip's goal was unassisted.
It did not take St. Olaf long after the break to put the game to bed. Rosenthal scored the first of his two goals to add to his assist. Gus Bruggeman, starting for Ken Ouren, played Rosenthal in on a breakaway and Rosenthal rounded Scots goalie Jesse Yourish to score his sixth of the season.
Rosenthal added the Oles' fourth goal in the 54th minute following a counter attack between him and Nick Lund. From wide on the left, Lund played a pass to Rosenthal at the top of the box. Rosenthal took a shot that was initially saved by Yourish but hit off the back of a Scot defender and in to the goal. The goal is officially credited to Rosenthal, with the assist to Lund.
With the five point day, Rosenthal now has 21 points (seven goals, seven assists) on the season. The 21 points put him in fourth in the conference behind Carleton's Branden McGarrity (32 pts), Gustavus' Zach Brown (22 pts), and St. Thomas' Nick Rapisarda (22 pts).
Rosenthal led the Oles with six shots, five of which were on goal. Johnrsud added four shots, while four Oles had two shots each. Will Mackaman, Robin Forslund, Jasper Edwards, Ian Henderson-Charnow, and Taylor Rasmussen each had one shot for Macalester.
Harry Ullmann made two saves in net for the Oles to pick up the shutout win. Yourish made six saves for the Scots in taking the loss.
The win leaves St. Olaf (8-5-1, 4-2-1 MIAC) in a tie with Carleton for third in the MIAC on 13 points but the Knights have a game in hand. Augsburg also has played one game less than St. Olaf and they sit three points behind the Oles. Macalester falls to 3-10-1 overall and 2-5 in the conference.
St. Olaf plays the second half of back-to-back games on Sunday when they host UW-Superior. The Oles and Yellowjackets (8-5-1) kickoff at 2 pm. UW-Superior defeated Macalester 2-1 back on August 31.
