October 23, 2012
ARDEN HILLS, Minn.- Four different Oles scored as the St. Olaf men's soccer team stayed in the MIAC playoff race with a 4-2 win at Bethel on Tuesday afternoon at Ona Orth Athletic Complex.
Stephen Johnson, David Rosenthal, Kevin Skrip, and Austin Dressen were the goal scorers for the Oles. Brian Holm and Jeremy Tan scored for Bethel (2-14-0, 1-8-0 MIAC).
Needing a win to have a realistic chance of making the four-team MIAC playoffs, St. Olaf got off to a dream start. In the opening minute of the game, a Ryan Johnsrud shot earned the Oles a corner and Stephen Johnson put home David Rosenthal's corner for his fourth goal of the year. The goal came at the 0:59 mark of the contest and Rosenthal's assist was his ninth of the year.
Bethel responded well to the opening goal, as they knotted the score at 1-1 in the 15th minute. Brian Holm scored the goal off an assist from Matthew Pisarski.
The Oles reclaimed the lead on Rosenthal's team-leading 12th goal of the season ten minutes later. Rosenthal's tally was unassisted. The 12 goals put Rosenthal level with Zach Brown of Gustavus for second in the conference, behind Branden McGarrity of Carleton who has 17.
A little more than three minutes before halftime, Kevin Skrip doubled the Oles lead with his fifth goal of the season. Skrip's goal was assisted by Will Totimeh and gave St. Olaf a more comfortable cushion heading into halftime.
Bethel got back in the game shortly after the break. Jeremy Tan's 49th minute goal brought the Royals within 3-2.
The Oles regained a two-goal advantage with twenty minutes to play and had a couple good chances for a fifth goal in the closing minutes. The fourth goal came courtesy of Austin Dressen who scored following a nice reverse pass from Brenden Johnson. Dressen's first goal of the season gave the Oles breathing room once again.
The Oles outshot the Royals 23-12 in the game and had twice as many shots on goal (14-7) as the hosts. Jake Stark led St. Olaf with four shots, while seven Oles had two or more shots. Kolten Fischer and Brent Neihart led Bethel with three shots each.
Harry Ullmann picked up the win in net for the Oles by making five saves. Chris Scott took the loss for the Royals by surrendering three goals in the first half. AJ Syler played the second half and made six saves.
St. Olaf improves to 11-5-1 on the season, including 6-2-1 in the MIAC. The Oles push to make the MIAC playoffs goes to the final day of the season, when they travel across town to face Carleton on Saturday at 1 pm. Gustavus and Carleton have clinched playoff berths, while St. Thomas, St. Olaf, and Saint John's remain in contention for the final two playoff spots.
