NORTHFIELD, Minn.- Emily Sierakowski scored the only goal of the game as the St. Olaf women's soccer team boosted its playoff chances with a 1-0 win over Bethel on Wednesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
Sierakowski's goal came after a scrum in the box following a St. Olaf corner in the 34th minute. The ball came to Sierakowski in front of the goal and she flicked it into the air, over Royals goalie Kathryn McGaffey and into the net. The goal was her second of the year and was unassisted.
Bethel outshot St. Olaf 11-5, including a 5-2 advantage in the second half as they pushed for a tying goal. Jessica Huseby had four shots for the Royals, while five Oles had one shot each.
Nora Forbes made three saves in net for St. Olaf in picking up her eighth shutout of the season. McGaffey made one save for Bethel.
The Ole win leaves both teams in a three-way tie for third in the MIAC playoff race. Both teams have 17 points from a 5-3-2 conference record. St. Olaf (7-6-4 overall) faces Carleton (7-5-3, 3-4-2 MIAC) on Saturday, while Bethel (8-6-3 overall) travels to St. Thomas on Saturday.
