Oles defeat Macalester in four, clinch playoff berth

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - St. Olaf used a run in the fourth set to upend Macalester 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 25-12) in a MIAC volleyball match on Wednesday at Skoglund Center, as the Oles clinched a spot in the six-team league playoffs in the process.
Melissa Burch had a team-best 16 kills to lead the Oles (10-20, 6-4 MIAC) and a foursome of seniors playing their final home match at Skoglund Center. Fellow seniors Ari Carlson and Katie Wolfram added 14 and 11 kills. The other senior, Kirstee Rotty, had a match-high 29 digs.
Macalester was led by Laura Avena's 26 kills on 72 attempts.
St. Olaf (6-4 MIAC) is one of three teams, with Carleton (6-4) and Bethel (6-4), tied for fourth place with one match left. The Oles play at Carleton on Saturday while Bethel plays first place St. Thomas (10-0). Concordia (7-3) and Saint Ben's (9-1) have also clinched a spot, and play each other on Saturday.
