Carleton advances in MIAC Playoff with win over Oles

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Sarah Nielsen had 21 kills as Carleton outlasted St. Olaf in five sets -- 22-25, 25-23, 24-26, 25-21, 18-16 -- in the quarterfinal round of the MIAC Playoffs on Tuesday night at Skoglund Center.
Melissa Burch had 21 kills for the Oles (11-21), who had match point before Carleton scored three straight. St. Olaf led 7-3, 13-10 and had a chance to win the match twice, at 15-14 and 16-15, before the Carleton rally.
Katie Wolfram added 19 kills and Kelly Heissel 10 for the Oles in the loss. Jessa Youso and Karen Halls had 16 and 11 for Carleton.
Defensively, Kirstee Rotty had a team-best 36 digs to break the school record for single-season digs. Rotty had a pair late in the third set to key a 6-1 run, as the Oles overcame a 23-20 deficit to win 26-24.
Carleton responded with a 25-21 victory in the fourth set to force a fifth.
Kersten Bork (right) had 65 set assists for St. Olaf in the loss while Alicia Flatt had 57 for the Knights.
Fifth-seeded Carleton (18-9) will play at No. 1 seed St. Thomas on Thursday night in the semifinals. No. 3 Concordia defeated Bethel in the other quarterfinal. The Cobbers will meet second-seeded Saint Ben's in the other semifinal.
