Schmiesing, Oles jump past No. 12 Bethel 24-17

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Dan Dobson connected with Jake Schmiesing for a game-winning, 30-yard touchdown as the St. Olaf football team defeated No. 12 Bethel University 24-17 on Saturday at Manitou Field.

The score, a jump ball in the end zone with 3:22 remaining in the game,was Schmiesing's second touchdown of the day. He finished with three catches for 40 yards.

Dobson went 25-of-41 for 227 yards and three touchdowns for the Oles (7-2, 5-2 MIAC). He also threw two interceptions, including one that Sean Mathis returned 44 yards for a Bethel (7-2, 5-2 MIAC) touchdown in the second quarter.

On the ground, Michael Thai led the Oles with 140 yards on 29 carries.

After St. Olaf took a 14-10 lead on a 5-yard Derek Henle touchdown catch with 6:35 to go in the third quarter, the Royals responded with a score of their own. Bethel quarterback Erik Peterson connected with Jesse Phenow on fourth down for a 32-yard touchdown, taking a 17-14 lead with 11:40 remaining in the game.

Peterson finished 14-of-27 for 119 yards, and Phenow added another 42 yards on the ground.

On St. Olaf's next drive Dobson drove the Oles to the Bethel 15-yard line, where Lucas Wainman tied the game with a 32-yard field goal. Bethel fumbled the ensuing kickoff on the 33-yard line, setting up Schmiesing's game-winning touchdown.

Defensively, the Oles held Bethel to 157 yards of total offense. Ben Dobson led the team with 6.5 tackles, while Erick Marigi added five more.

The Oles play at St. Thomas next Saturday. The game time is 1:10 p.m.
