ST. PAUL, Minn.- David Rosenthal, Stephen Johnson, and Mackenzie Lund were each named to the 2012 MIAC Men's Soccer All-Conference Team, as announced by the league on Thursday afternoon.
The honor was the second straight for both Rosenthal and Johnson, while Lund was named for the first time as an Ole. The league also announced the All-MIAC Sportsmanship team and senior Austin Dressen was St. Olaf's representative. Dressen started all 18 games for the Oles, scoring one goal.
Rosenthal put together a second straight impressive season offensively for the Oles. Last year, he was named MIAC Player of the Year and was a first-team All-American by notching 14 goals and nine assists. This year, Rosenthal nearly repeated those numbers, posting team-highs in goals (12) and assists (9). The junior forward's 33 points were the third most in the MIAC, as his 12 goals were tied for fourth and his 9 assists were tied for third. Three of Rosenthal's goals were game-winners and four came from the penalty spot.
Like Rosenthal, Johnson recorded a second straight strong season for the Oles as a center back. Despite losing center back partner Adam Hadro to a knee injury, Johnson's play helped limit Ole opponents to 16 goals in 18 games. The 0.88 goals-against-average for the team was the third best in the MIAC. However, Johnson's contributions on the offensive end were equally as impressive. The junior defender was tied for fifth on the team with four goals and also added an assist in starting all 18 games for the Oles.
Lund was named All-MIAC for the first time after a four goal, two assist season. Lund's 10 points were the fifth-most by an Ole. The junior midfielder had a knack for scoring important goals, as three of his four goals were game-winning goals.
As a trio, Rosenthal, Johnson, and Lund helped lead the Oles to a 11-6-1 record, including a 6-3-1 mark in the conference. St. Olaf missed out on a spot in the MIAC playoffs by a single point after losing to regular season co-champ Carleton on the final day of the season. All three will return next year as the Oles look to return to the playoffs.
