November 12, 2012
ST. PAUL, Minn. - St. Olaf first year swimmer Abbey Schnaith won two individual events on Friday on the way to earning MIAC swimmer of the week honors on Monday.
Friday, she won two individual events, finished second in another and helped an Ole relay team finish first while setting a new pool record. Her contributions were key as St. Olaf took down perennial power Gustavus in a home dual meet in Northfield, Minn.
Schnaith contributed to big dual-meet win with great performances in both freestyle and backstroke events Saturday in her home pool. She finished first in the 50-yard freestyle with a winning time of 24.71 seconds, and she added another win in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:07.71, which was a lifetime best. Her time of 1:00.23 in the 100-yard backstroke was good for second place, just 0.03 behind a St. Olaf teammate. Schnaith finished the freestyle leg of the 200-yard medley relay in 23.81 seconds to help St. Olaf win the race and set a new pool record with a time of 1:48.39. All four performances were crucial to the Oles' team performance, which resulted in a 169-131 win over the Gusties, who are the defending MIAC champs.
The Ole women and Schnaith will take the rest of November off, as the next meet on their schedule is the two-day Rochester Invite, held on Dec. 1-2. St. Olaf will take a trip to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in late December, and then will face the bulk of its schedule once the calendar flips to 2013, with six meets in January and February.
