Women's basketball defeats St. Catherine for first MIAC win

NORTHFIELD, Minn.- Three Oles were in double figures as the St. Olaf women's basketball team picked up its first MIAC win of the year with a 72-38 win over St. Catherine on Wednesday night at the Skoglund Center.
Nikki Frogner led the Oles with 15 points and six rebounds. The sophomore center was 5-8 from the floor. Kim Cerjan went 3-7 from behind the arc as she scored 13 points off the bench. Elise Raney added 10 points, nine boards, and four blocks also off the bench.
Sarah Mong was the lone Wildcat in double figures with 10 points on 5-13 shooting. Sarina Baker had eight and Kristen Lee added seven on 2-5 shooting from long range.
Lee and Jenna Mistler each hit threes in the first two minutes for the Wildcats as St. Catherine got off to a quick 8-3 start. However, the Oles then controlled the rest of the game to improve to 3-4 overall and 1-3 in the MIAC. St. Catherine is now 0-4 in the conference and 1-5 overall.
After making three of their first four shots from the field, the Wildcats made just two of their final 19 shots to finish the half 5-23 (21.7%). St. Olaf outscored St. Catherine 37-4 during the final 16 plus minutes of the first half to lead 40-12 at the half.
In the second half, the Oles never led by less than 23 and stretched the lead to as many as 38. Seventeen St. Olaf players saw action and eleven scored.
St. Olaf shot 14-30 (46.7%) in the first half and cooled off a little in the second to finish at 41.9% (26-62) for the contest. St. Catherine shot 27.5% (14-51) for the game. The Oles outrebounded the Wildcats 48-30 and forced 23 turnovers in the win. Eighteen of the 48 boards came on the offensive end. Ten Oles recorded at least one steal in the game.
St. Olaf returns to action on Tuesday with a game at St. Thomas. The Tommies (5-1, 3-0) are ranked No. 5 in the country and has won 27 straight conference games and 18 in a row at home.
