Blazers make 12 threes to top Ole women

NORTHFIELD, Minn.- Visiting St. Benedict sank 12 three-pointers on its way to a 72-56 win over the St. Olaf women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon at the Skoglund Center.
The 12 makes came on 20 attempts for the Blazers, as their hot long-range shooting solved the Oles zone defense. Tish Alexander made her first four and finished 4-of-5 for her 12 points. Jessiac Fischer, Morgan Dale, and Brianna Barrett each made two threes for St. Ben's. St. Olaf struggled with its three-point shooting, going just 3-19 (15.8 percent) for the game.
Nikki Frogner posted a double-double for St. Olaf with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Mackenzie Wolter was the only other Ole in double figures, finishing with 11 points on 4-11 shooting.
St. Olaf (7-8, 5-7 MIAC) hung with St. Ben's (11-4, 9-3 MIAC) for the first twelve plus minutes of the game as the Blazers led 20-17 at the 7:23 mark. Then the Blazers went on a 15-4 run to close the half and took a 14-point lead into the break. During the run, Alexander nailed back-to-back threes and Dale and Canton each connected from behind the arc.
The Oles started the second half strong as they scored the first seven points of the second half. Elise Raney scored five straight points for St. Olaf but that was the closest they got for the remainder of the contest. St. Ben's led by as many as 23 in the second half.
St. Ben's cooled off a little in the second half and finished the game shooting 42.1 percent from the field. St. Olaf shot 33.3 percent after half and ended at 31.3 percent. Whitney Canton scored a game-high 18 points on 5-8 shooting from the floor and went 7-9 from the free throw line for the Blazers.
St. Olaf hosts Gustavus (11-4, 10-2 MIAC) on Monday night at 7:30 pm. The Gusties hung on to beat the Oles 60-57 on December 3 in St. Peter.
