Marx leads Saint John's past Ole men

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn.- Seth Marx scored a game-high 17 points and two other Johnnies were in double figures, as Saint John's defeated the St. Olaf men's basketball team 75-61 on Saturday afternoon at Sexton Arena.
Marx went 4-9 from behind the arc and 6-13 from the floor for the game. Mitchell Kuck scored 14 on 6-17 shooting and Kevin McKenzie added 11 for the Johnnies (6-10, 5-6 MIAC). McKenzie and Kuck each also dished out five assists.
St. Olaf (5-11, 4-7 MIAC) was led by Justin Pahl's 14 points and five rebounds. The first-year hit two threes and went 4-7 from the field. Sterling Nielsen was the only other Ole in double figures, finishing with 10 points.
The Oles started the game by opening up a 7-2 lead but Saint John's controlled the play after that. After taking the lead midway through the first half, the Johnnies went on a 13-4 run to lead by 10 with 2:48 left in the half and took an eight-point lead into the break.
The Johnnies carried the momentum into the second half as they pulled away from the Oles. Marx scored nine quick points in the first couple minutes of the second half and Kuck poured in five himself to give Saint John's a 50-33 lead with 16:39 left. St. Olaf could not get any closer than 11 the rest of the way.
The Johnnies shot 48.3 percent for the game compared to 45.1 percent for the Oles. Saint John's held a 36-27 advantage on the boards and handed out 17 assists in the win.
St. Olaf travels to St. Peter on Monday night to face Gustavus. The Gusties topped the Oles 83-79 at the Skoglund Center on December 3.
