Hines scores 26 to lead Auggies to win over Ole men

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.- Parker Hines scored a season-high 26 points as Augsburg defeated the St. Olaf men's basketball team 81-72 on Saturday afternoon at Si Melby Hall.
Hines shot 7-for-11 from the floor, including 4-for-6 on threes, and knocked down all eight of his free throws for Augsburg (17-6, 12-6 MIAC). Hines also tied teammate Dan Kornbaum with a game-high seven rebounds. St. Olaf (9-14, 8-10 MIAC) had five players in double figures in the loss.
Mason Braden led the Oles with 14 points on 6-for-7 shooting off the bench. Josh Pratt scored all 12 of his points in the first half and added five rebounds and six assists. Nielsen also had 12 points and six assists abut the sophomore also had five steals. Justin Pahl scored 11, while Connor Gunderson had 10 points in just 16 minutes.
In addition to Hines' big game, Tyler Schmidt had 13 points for the Auggies. Schmidt was 3-for-4 from the field and sank six of eight free throws. Noah Veach added 10 points, four rebounds, and five assists for Augsburg.
After Augsburg got off to a 7-2 lead, St. Olaf settled down and hung with the Auggies until the latter stages of the first half. A Braden jumper made the score 26-25 Augsburg with 4:53 left in the half before the Auggies stretched it to nine at 38-29. However, St. Olaf scored the final four points of the half, including a Nielsen fade-away jumper from the top of the key at the buzzer to go in down 38-33.
In the second half, the Oles were never able to wrestle the lead away from the Auggies. Shortly after the break, Augsburg stretched the lead back to nine but St. Olaf whittled it back down to two with 11:02 remaining. Matthew Hultgren's jumper capped a 14-7 spurt for the Oles.
Augsburg responded to the Ole run with back-to-back layups from Andy Seidlitz and Hines and eventually the lead grew to 15 with 5:35 left. The Auggies used a 16-3 run to take their largest lead of the game. Veach and Schmidt capped the run with back-to-back layups.
The Oles were unable to muster a comeback as Augsburg made enough free throws down the stretch. The Auggies were 26-for-35 from the charity stripe in the game to outscore St. Olaf by 11 from the free throw line. Augsburg also outgunned St. Olaf on threes. Both teams put up 14 threes but Augsburg made eight to just two for the Oles.
The Auggies shot 55.8 percent for the game, including 71.4 percent in the second half. Augsburg only took 14 field goal attempts after the break as St. Olaf was whistled for 27 fouls in the contest. The Oles shot at a 46.8 percent clip but were unable to hit a three after halftime on eight attempts.
St. Olaf remains a game behind Saint John's and Bethel for the final MIAC Playoff spot. The Oles travel to St. Thomas on Wednesday night at 7:30. The Tommies (23-1, 18-1 MIAC) have clinched the MIAC regular season crown and beat St. Olaf 94-64 on January 14.
