Men's tennis earns first win of season

OWATONNA, Minn.- The St. Olaf men's tennis team earned their first win of the season with a 7-2 defeat of Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at Owatonna Tennis Center.

Joey Kronzer and Charlie Reinertsen each won in both singles and doubles action for St. Olaf (1-1, 1-0 MIAC). Concordia (0-1, 0-1 MIAC) got a singles win from Zach Zitur and a doubles win from the duo of Brian Olson and Devin Larson.

The Oles took two of three competitive doubles matches. Olson and Larson edged Stephen Nolan and Andy Catania in a tie-breaker at first doubles. Kronzer and Reinertsen defeated Peter Dahlberg and Nick Moe 8-4 at second doubles. In their first match of the season, Matt Christensen and Ryan Abdella topped Zach Biggar and Austin Stern 8-5 at third doubles.

St. Olaf picked up five singles wins as well with each of them coming in straight sets. Catania and Nico Gibb each won their second singles matches of the weekend. Gibb cruised by Zach Biggar 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles. Catania won the final three games of the first set in a 7-5, 6-0 win over Dennis Larsen.

At first singles, Stephen Nolan defeated Brian Olson 6-3, 6-3. Kronzer earned his first collegiate win with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Dahlberg. Charlie Reinertsen won the first set of his match against Moe in a tie-breaker but fell behind 5-0 in the second set. However, Reinertsen rattled off the final seven games to claim a 7-6, 7-5 win.

Concordia's lone singles win came at fifth singles, where Zach Zitur recovered from a set down to beat Mike Schroeder 1-6, 6-4, 10-5.

Next up for the Oles is a match against St. Cloud State University on Saturday at 1:30 pm in Owatonna.
