WINONA, Minn.- The St. Olaf women's tennis team fell 7-2 to Division-II Winona State University on Friday night in Winona.
The Oles (1-1, 1-0 MIAC) got wins from first-years Maya MacGibbon and Bailey Kent at fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Julia Ellis and Kristi Kroker both forced their singles matches into super tie-breakers but the Warriors (8-0) came out on top in both matches.
MacGibbon got her first singles win of the year with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Brittney Freund, while Kent won her second straight match by virtue of a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Laura Roesslein. The Warriors won the top four singles matches and swept doubles.
Despite losing at first through fourth singles, St. Olaf had chances in each of those matches. Lisa Hall lost a tough first set to Erin Kappers, the reigning NSIC Player of the Year, and fell 7-5, 6-2 at first singles. At fourth singles it was a similar story for Lizzie Carlson who was defeated by Brianna Navelka 7-5, 6-1.
Ellis and Kroker each bounced back from losing the first set of their matches only to go down in two close super tie-breakers. Ellis split the first two sets with Jessica Urban and had a match point in the super tie-break but Urban eventually won it 12-10. Kroker and Larua Lindstrand split two close sets before Lindstrand won the tie-break 10-6.
In doubles, the closest match came at third doubles where Havelka and Freund edged Caitlin Owsley and Andrea Jumes 9-7. The Warriors also got wins from Kappers and Urban and Roesslein and Lindstrand.
The Oles return to MIAC play on Saturday with a match against Hamline. The match with the Pipers is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Owatonna.
