Ole men grab win over D-II St. Cloud State

OWATONNA, Minn.- The St. Olaf men's tennis team's depth paid off as the squad topped Division-II St. Cloud State 6-3 on Saturday afternoon at Owatonna Tennis Center.

St. Olaf (2-1, 1-0 MIAC) won two of the three doubles matches and four of the six singles matches to knock off the Huskies (3-4). Charlie Reinertsen won in both singles and doubles for the Oles.

In doubles, St. Olaf got wins from the teams of Reinertsen and Joey Kronzer and Jack Dutton and Keenan Gladd-Brown. Reinertsen and Kronzer won their second straight match 8-2 over Mattheus Aching and Lucas Luz. In his first collegiate action, Gladd-Brown teamed with Dutton to top Brenyn Anderson and Jeremy Thompson 9-7.

The Oles picked up singles victories from Andy Catania, Reinertsen, Nico Gibb, and Ben Carlson. Catania battled past Jordan Peterson 6-3, 7-6 (5) in two tight sets for his third straight match win at second singles. Gibb also earned his third win in a row with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Luz at fifth singles. Reinertsen defeated Aching 6-1, 6-3 at fourth singles, while Carlson also won in straight sets in his first match of the year 6-3, 6-2 over Anderson.

Tyler Hjalmquist led the Huskies with wins in both singles and doubles. He teamed with Peterson for an 8-3 win over Catania and Stephen Nolan. In singles, Hjalmquist came up against Nolan and won 6-2, 6-3. In a marathon match at third singles, St. Cloud State's Matt Sturgeon defeated Joey Kronzer 7-5, 6-7 (2), 10-6.

St. Olaf returns to MIAC action on Friday night in Owatonna with a match against Hamline at 6:30 p.m. The Oles have topped the Pipers six straight times, including two 5-4 wins in the last three years.
