OWATONNA, Minn.- The St. Olaf women's tennis team suffered their first MIAC tennis loss as St. Thomas used a doubles sweep to earn a 7-2 win on Friday night at Owatonna Indoor Tennis Center.

Shelby Henderson, Bridget Noack, Kara Lefsrud, and Brittany Alexander all won in both singles and doubles for St. Thomas (6-0, 3-0 MIAC). St. Olaf (2-2, 2-1 MIAC) got singles wins from Julia Ellis and Maya MacGibbon.

The Tommies used a strong start in doubles to take a 3-0 lead into singles play. The pairs of Henderson and Mary Allen, Lefsrud and Noack, and Alexander and Claire Elkin each jumped out to early leads on their way to wins. Andrea Jumes and Caitlin Owsley had the closest match but fell 8-4 to Alexander and Elkin.

The singles matches were much more closely contested, as St. Olaf claimed two wins and lost two super tie-breakers. The match of the day came at first singles where Henderson defeated Hall 17-15 in a match tie-break. Hall broke Henderson in the eighth game of the first set to take it 6-3 but Henderson then took the second set 6-1. Both players held several match points in the back-and-forth super tie-break but Henderson outlasted Hall to claim the win.

The match between Ellis and Allen at second singles also was a nail-biter. Allen won the first set 6-1 but Ellis broke Allen in the final of the game of the second set to take it 6-4. Ellis raced out to a 7-1 lead in the super tie-breaker but Allen got within two points at 9-7 before Ellis closed it out.

St. Olaf's second point came at fifth singles where MacGibbon earned a straight-set win over Wright. MacGibbon improved to 3-0, including two conference wins, on the season. Fellow first-year Bailey Kent fought back to force a super tie-breaker against Alexander but lost 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 at sixth singles. Kent is tied with MacGibbon with three singles wins this year.

St. Thomas got straight-set wins from Noack and Lefsrud over Kristi Kroker and Lizzie Carlson at third and fourth singles. Kroker was up a break early but ended up losing 6-4, 6-1 to Noack.

The Oles return to the court on Friday when they face Luther in Rochester. St. Olaf and Luther will start play at 7:30 at Rochester Tennis Center. The Oles topped the Norse 6-3 last spring.
