Tommies doubles sweep too much for Ole men to overcome
March 9, 2013
OWATONNA, Minn.- The St. Olaf men's tennis team had their first MIAC setback of the year in a 6-3 loss to St. Thomas on Saturday afternoon at Owatonna Indoor Tennis Center.
St. Thomas (4-0, 2-0) used a doubles sweep and three singles wins to claim the win. St. Olaf (3-2, 2-1 MIAC) got singles wins from Stephen Nolan, Andy Catania, and Mike Schroeder.
The doubles sweep extended the Tommies perfect start in doubles this year as they have not lost a doubles match in their first four matches. The duos of Brian McCarthy and Mitchell Blackey and Brendan O'Connell and Brady Radermacher earned 8-4 wins over Catania and Nolan and Charlie Reinertsen and Joey Kronzer. Allen-Michael Muench and Steven Skanse topped Ryan Abdella and Ben Carlson 8-3 at third doubles.
All six singles matches were decided in straight sets with each team winning three. Nolan improved to 3-0 in the MIAC this year with a 6-2, 6-3 win over O'Connell at first singles. Catania got his fourth singles win in five matches by virtue of a 6-3, 6-3 win over Brian McCarthy at second singles. The sixth singles match was decided in two close sets but Mike Schroeder won both with a 7-6 (5), 7-5 defeat of Steven Skanse. Through four matches the Oles are 13-5 in MIAC singles matches and 5-4 in doubles.
St. Thomas got wins from Blackey, Radermacher, and Muench at third through fifth singles. In the closest of the three Tommie wins, Blackey edged Kronzer 7-6 (5) 6-4 at third. Radermacher and Muench also picked up straight-set victories over Reinertsen and Gibb. The loss was Gibb's first of the season after four straight wins.
The Oles next match is on Saturday against Luther. The Norse and Oles will do battle at Rochester Tennis Center at 5:30 p.m. Last year, St. Olaf beat Luther 5-4 in match that featured five three-set singles matches.
