Ole women edge Luther 5-4

OWATONNA, Minn.- The St. Olaf women's tennis team earned a narrow 5-4 win over Luther in a non-conference match on Friday evening at Owatonna Indoor Tennis Center.
St. Olaf (3-2, 2-1 MIAC) used wins at the top three singles spots to propel them to the win. Luther (0-3) got two points in both singles and doubles play.
The Norse got the better part of three close doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles. Elise Allen and Maggie Helms defeated Julia Ellis and Lisa Hall 8-6 at first doubles and Lola White-Baer and Hailey Johnson earned a 8-5 win over Andrea Jumes and Caitlin Owsley at third doubles. Maya MacGibbon and Kristi Kroker got the Oles their lone doubles point with a 8-5 victory over Katy Lindstrom and Annie Whiteley.
Each of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets with the Oles getting the four points they needed. Hall, Ellis, and Kroker each picked up wins at the top three spots. Ellis did not drop a game in her match with White-Baer, while Kroker played the closest match of the night in a 6-4, 6-3 win over Helms. The other St. Olaf point came from Bailey Kent at fifth singles where she defeated Whiteley 6-0, 6-4. Kent now has a team-high four singles wins this season.
Lindstrom and Jenna Myers were victorious for Luther in their singles matches. Lindstrom handed MacGibbon her first singles loss of the year with a 6-3, 6-3 win at fourth singles. Myers defeated Erin Hynes 6-4, 6-2 at sixth singles.
St. Olaf heads to Hilton Head, South Carolina for a spring break trip. The Oles will play five matches in five days starting on March 25 against Virginia Wesleyan.
