Luther's strong singles play earns win over Ole men

ROCHESTER, Minn.- Luther claimed wins at the top five singles spots as they defeated the St. Olaf men's tennis team 7-2 in a non-conference match on Saturday night at Rochester Tennis Connection.
Nick Mozena and Matt Bellio each won their singles matches and teamed up for a doubles win for Luther (3-5). St. Olaf (3-3, 2-1 MIAC) got wins from Andy Catania and Stephen Nolan at first doubles and Mike Schroeder at sixth singles.
Catania and Nolan handed Quinn Foley and Ramesh Karki their second loss of the year with an 8-3 win. The win also leveled their season record at 3-3. The pairs of Mozena and Bellio and Sean Brown and Sam Cychosz also were victorious for the Norse.
Three of the six singles matches went to super tie-breakers, while the other three were straight-set wins for Luther. The lone Ole win came from Schroeder's win over Matt Knutson. After winning the first set 6-4, Schroeder dropped a second set tie-break 9-7 but recovered to win the match tie-break 10-7. The win was his third straight for St. Olaf.
Nolan and Joey Kronzer each won the first set of their matches against Mozena and Bellio but lost in close super tie-breakers. Mozena edged Nolan 1-6, 6-2, 10-7 and Bellio got by Kronzer 3-6, 7-5, 12-10. Karki, Torstein Jystad, and Foley each earned straight-set wins for the Norse at first, fourth, and fifth singles.
The Oles are off for spring break until an April 6th match at Saint Mary's. St. Olaf has defeated the Cardinals 6-3 in each of the last two years.
