Women's tennis opens spring break trip with win

HILTON HEAD, S.C.- The St. Olaf women's tennis team began their five-match spring break trip with an 8-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan College in their first outdoor match of the season on Monday morning in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

St. Olaf (4-2, 2-1 MIAC) received two defaults from the short-handed Marlins (5-6), who had only five players. The Oles won four of the five singles matches and two of the three doubles matches that were played.

The pairs of Lisa Hall and Julia Ellis and Caitlin Owsley and Bailey Kent got doubles wins for St. Olaf. Hall and Ellis fell behind 4-1 to Sara Yousif and Victoria Ryherd but came back to earn a 8-5 victory. Playing their first match together, Owsley and Kent defeated Mia Proctor and Stephanie Bittner 8-4.

Julia Ellis won her third straight singles match with a 6-2, 4-6, 10-5 win over Ryherd in the closest match of the day at second singles. Kristi Kroker got off to a quick 3-0 start in her match against Proctor and rode it to a 6-3, 6-3 victory. Maya MacGibbon did not lose a game in her match with Hannah Parent at fourth singles. Lizzie Carlson and Bittner played the longest match of the morning with Carlson coming out on top 6-4, 6-4.

The Marlins lone point came from Yousif's 6-4, 6-4 win over Hall at first singles. Hall fell behind 5-2 in both sets before battling back to 5-4 before Yousif closed them out.

The Oles face Erskine College (S.C.) on Tuesday morning. The Flying Fleet are 8-4 so far this year.
