HILTON HEAD, S.C.- Nationally-ranked Oberlin defeated the St. Olaf women's tennis team 7-2 on Thursday morning in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
The Yeowomen, ranked No. 30 in the nation and No. 8 in the region, won five singles matches and two doubles matches to improve to 10-4 on the year. St. Olaf (4-5, 2-1 MIAC) got a doubles win from Lizzie Carlson and Bailey Kent and a singles win from Erin Hynes but dropped their third straight match.
The two teams started with singles where Oberlin got off to a 4-1 start. Farah Leclercq, Brenna Sheldon, Grace Porter, and Erin Johnson picked up straight-set wins in their singles matches. Hynes earned her second-straight win with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Ariana Abayomi at sixth singles. Hynes is now 4-2 on the year.
Trailing 4-1, St. Olaf needed to win the final singles match and sweep doubles in order to claim the win. At one point, Maya MacGibbon was in a super tie-breaker with Preeya Shah at fourth singles and the Oles were winning at first and third doubles. However, Shah pulled out her match with MacGibbon 7-6 (5), 2-6, 10-8 to seal the win for the Yeowomen.
Oberlin won two of the three doubles matches as well, as Leclercq and Porter and Johnson and Abayomi were victorious. Leclercq and Porter improved to 8-4 on the year with an 8-5 win over Lisa Hall and Julia Ellis. Kristi Kroker and MacGibbon pushed Johnson and Abayomi to a tie-breaker before dropping it 7-5. Carlson and Kent cruised past Emily Fuller and Alex Kahn 8-1 at third doubles in their first match together.
The Oles look to close out their trip on a high note when they face SUNY-Oneonta on Friday afternoon. The Red Dragons are 9-7 so far, including a 5-4 loss to Virginia Wesleyan, who St. Olaf defeated in Hilton Head.
