Four super tie-break losses plague men's tennis against Saint Mary's

WINONA, Minn.- Saint Mary's University used a doubles sweep and four singles wins, all in super tie-breakers, to defeat the St. Olaf men's tennis team 7-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Winona Tennis Center.
Michael Lunka, Sam Puff, Andrew Rangitsch, and Collin Kaczorowski each won in singles and doubles for the Cardinals (13-5, 2-4 MIAC). St. Olaf (3-4, 2-2 MIAC) got singles wins from Charlie Reinertsen and Ben Carlson.
The duos of Lunka-Steingraeber, Puff-Smith, and Rangitsch-Kaczorowski got Saint Mary's off to a 3-0 lead. Lunka-Steingraeber and Rangitsch-Kaczorowski each earned 8-4 wins at first and third doubles. Puff and Smith won a long tie-breaker 13-11 against Joey Kronzer and Ryan Abdella at second doubles to take the match 9-8. Lunka and Steingraeber improve to 11-4 on the year, while Rangitsch and Kaczorowski are now 7-2.
The Oles had chances in each of the six singles matches but were unable to overcome the 3-0 hole. Lunka and Puff each lost the first set of their matches to Nolan and Catania but they both ended up taking the matches in super tie-breakers 10-4. Rangitsch and Kronzer split the first two sets, with each player taking one 6-3. Rangitsch, however, outlasted Kronzer 10-6 in the super tie-breaker for his 15th win of the year. Kaczorowski also notched his 15th win by defeating Mike Schroeder 10-7 in a super tie-break after a pair of 6-2 sets.
Reinertsen and Carlson's singles wins came in the only two straight-set matches of the afternoon. Reinertsen dropped only one game in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Steingraeber at third singles. Carlson took a first set tie-break 8-6 over Smith before winning the second set 6-4 for his second singles win in two tries.
The Oles return to the court on Saturday when they travel to Collegeville to face Saint John's at 2 pm.
