Oles leave Hamline with softball split

ST. PAUL, Minn.- The St. Olaf softball team began Thursday afternoon with a 6-2 victory over Hamline University, but dropped game two in an identical 6-2 margin to emerge with a split in the MIAC doubleheader.
Game One: St. Olaf 6, Hamline 2
A six run explosion for St. Olaf in the third inning paved the way for a 6-2 triumph over Hamline in game one.
Becca Walz went 3-for-3 at the plate, opening the scoring for the Oles with a two RBI single in the third. The third run came home in the next at bat, after a Jessica Wilson single brought in Mackenzie Wolter, Wilson finished the game 2-for-3.
Haley Schreier finished off the scoring in the third, and the game, after a three RBI double, giving St. Olaf a commanding 6-0 lead entering the fourth inning.
Amy Prok tossed the complete game for the Oles, striking out six Pipers in her winning effort.
Hamline's scoring offense came in the form of a Cecily Abbadessa double and a Jenna Dushaw single in the sixth inning.
Game Two: Hamline 6, St. Olaf 2
Hamline opened up a three run lead in the fifth inning and added three more in the sixth en route to a 6-2 victory in game two of the doubleheader.
The game remained scoreless until a Bethany Hine triple to right center field broke the stalemate and gave the Pipers a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning.
Lauren Clouston, Samantha Mau, and Jenna Dushaw each added RBIs in the sixth to give Hamline all the scoring they needed to secure the victory, and the series split.
Julie Fergus capped off a great game for the Oles by breaking Hamline pitcher Brianna Vela's shutout bid with an RBI double in the sixth inning. Fergus finished the game batting 3-for-3. Haley Schreier added the second RBI two batters later with a ground out that allowed Alex Lebens to reach home.
Danielle Collins pitched a complete game for St. Olaf, picking up the loss.
The Oles return home tomorrow for an afternoon MIAC doubleheader with the College of Saint Benedict, starting at 3:30 p.m.
