St. Kate's top Ole women, win MIAC title

NORTHFIELD, Minn.- The St. Olaf women's tennis team got singles wins from Julia Ellis and Erin Hynes but St. Catherine proved to be too tough in a 7-2 loss on Friday afternoon at Carlson Courts.

After coming off of a 8-1 playoff clinching win at Macalester on Thursday, St. Olaf (9-7, 6-3 MIAC) was over-matched by St. Kates (15-1, 10-0 MIAC) who clinched the regular season MIAC title outright with the win. Victoria Bravo, Kylie Ketcho, Maria Koval and Mikinzee Salo each won in both singles and doubles for the Wildcats.

Ellis was defeated in her first set 6-4 by Michaela Burroughs but fought back to claim a 6-4 second set victory. She then went on to take the superbreaker 10-4. With the win, Ellis won her third straight match and is now 7-1 in conference play.

Hynes also moved to 7-1 in MIAC play with her 6-2, 6-2 victory over Angie Lorenzen. The sophomore is now 8-2 in her last 10 matches.

The Wildcats won the remaining four singles matches in straight sets. Bravo led the way at first singles with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 victory over Lisa Hall. Koval also picked up a win for St. Kate's at number three singles by overcoming an early deficit by defeating Kristi Kroker 7-5, 6-1. With the wins, Bravo and Koval are now each 10-0 in MIAC play.

Ketcho closed out a tough first set over Maya MacGibbon with a 7-5 win and went on to take the second set 6-1. Salo defeated Lizzie Carlson 6-1, 6-2 at sixth singles.

St. Kate's won all three doubles matches by getting wins from Bravo/Ketcho, Burroughs/Koval and Lorenzen/Salo. With the three victories, the Wildcats moved to 28-2 on the season in MIAC doubles play.

St. Olaf closes out its regular season schedule on Wednesday with a home match against rival Carleton (10-7, 6-1 MIAC). Both teams have clinched berths in the upcoming MIAC playoff tournament, which will take place at Gustavus May 3 and 4.
