Softball leaves Moorhead with sweep over Concordia
April 28, 2013
MOORHEAD, Minn. After demolishing Concordia College-Moorhead 9-0 in five innings in game one, St. Olaf completed the Sunday afternoon sweep with a 5-4 victory in game two of the MIAC softball doubleheader.
Game One: St. Olaf 9, Concordia 0 (5 inn.)
A two-hit, five RBI performance from Mackenzie Wolter highlighted a 9-0 win over Concordia in game one of the doubleheader.
Wolter hit a second-inning double to center field to spot the Oles a 3-0 lead early, and followed it up with a two-run home run on her next at bat in the fourth to kick start a four-run inning for the St. Olaf offense.
Becca Walz, Haley Schreier, and Sara Lind each recorded two hits in a game where eight different Oles had at least one hit.
Amy Prok earned the win for St. Olaf, throwing all five innings giving up only four hits, one walk, and striking out four.
Game Two: St. Olaf 5, Concordia 4
Three runs scored in the top of the seventh inning gave St. Olaf just enough to withstand a late rally by Concordia and earn the game two victory and the series sweep.
Becca Walz hit what turned out to be the game-winning RBI with a single to center field. But the Cobbers' Joelle Link made things interesting with a 2 RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.
Amy Prok earned the last out of the game and the save, adding to her win she picked up in game one. Kristen Rudberg gets credit for the win, coming in to relieve for Ole starter Danielle Collins in the middle of the fifth inning.
The tightly contested game remained scoreless until the fifth inning, when the two teams each scored a pair, including a home run for Haley Schreier.
The sweep improves the Oles' record to 10-14 (5-7 MIAC). Next up is a MIAC doubleheader at Macelester College tomorrow starting at 4:00 p.m.
