ST. PAUL, Minn.- Sophomore Stephen Nolan and senior Andy Catania were recognized in the 2013 MIAC Men's Tennis Awards, as announced by the league on Wednesday.
The doubles duo was named All-MIAC for doubles, while Nolan's outstanding play also earned him a spot on the all-conference team for singles. Led by Nolan and Catania, the Oles finished 6-7 overall, including 5-4 in the MIAC, before losing to Saint John's in the playoffs.
Nolan and Catania occupied the No. 1 doubles position for St. Olaf for the duration of the season and posted a 6-7 record. The pair were 4-5 against the best doubles teams in the MIAC. They posted back-to-back 8-6 wins in important matches against Saint John's and Bethel in mid-April to help the Oles into the playoffs. Catania was all-conference for doubles for the second straight year, while Nolan collected the honor for doubles for the first time.
Nolan was named All-MIAC for singles for the second straight year. The sophomore was 7-6 between the No. 1 and No. 2 positions for the Oles, which included a 7-2 mark in the MIAC. Nolan was no stranger to long matches, as he won three of his five super tie-breakers in conference play. He earned conference wins at No. 1 singles against Concordia, St. Thomas, Bethel, and Macalester, while he also posted a win against Carleton.
Nolan will lead the list of returners for the Oles next season, as the team looks to make the MIAC playoffs for the seventh consecutive season.
