St. Olaf bats erupt in doubleheader sweep of MAC
May 8, 2013
NORTHFIELD, Minn. - St. Olaf scored a combined 33 runs in its sweep of Macalester College in a Wednesday doubleheader at Mark Almli Field.
Game One: St. Olaf 9, Macalester 6
The St. Olaf bats came alive early in game one and built a 9-0 lead after three innings after seven second inning runs and putting up another two in the third. Nick Kulla had two hits, a run and an RBI. Nick Denn scored twice without gathering a hit by reaching base after an error by Macalester pitcher Lucas Babinec and by drawing a walk.
Nate Gelle earned the win for the Oles. Gelle gave up two runs, neither of which were earned, and struck out six in four innings of work.
Game Two: St. Olaf 24, Macalester 12
The Oles again started the game hot by scoring five runs in the first inning of game two. But Macalester roared back in the top of the fourth by putting up a whopping eleven runs. Luckily for the Oles, their bats still had plenty of muscle left and they too scored eleven runs in their half of the fourth, highlighted by a 3-run home run by Jack Schechinger to make the score 16-11 after only four innings of play.
It was all St. Olaf from there as the Oles were able to tack on an additional eight runs in the fifth to bring their run total to 24 for the game. All but one St. Olaf starter had two or more runs in the game.
Trent Friedrich pitched three key innings of relief to keep the Scot's bats at bay and picked up his third save of the year in the process.
The Oles will play their final two regular season games Thursday when Augsburg College comes to St. Olaf for a doubleheader that begins at 2:30 p.m. St. Olaf needs wins in both games in order to reach the six-team MIAC playoff that begins Friday.
