Oles can't find net in 0-0 tie to Blugolds
September 11, 2013
NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Scoring was non-existent Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference women's soccer game between St. Olaf and UW-Eau Claire which resulted in a 0-0 tie.
Both the Oles and Blugolds had their chances at goals but neither team could capitalize on its opportunities. The Oles alone had three corner kicks within the first 15 minutes of play but failed to come away with any goals.
The closest potential goals the Oles saw were from Madison Van Wylen and Megan Fellows in the 60th and 80th minutes respectively. Van Wylen took a sliding left-footed shot but saw the ball soar just wide of the goal. Fellows shot was a straight on rocket that looked to be over Blugolds goalkeeper Nina Behrenbrinker's head, but Behrenbrinker made a leaping save to keep the game tied.
The Blugolds also had their opportunities in the second half but some nice defense highlighted by seniors Nora Forbes and Emma Crumley helped to keep Eau Claire out of the net. Forbes had a spectacular diving save in the 67th minute and some aggressive defending by Crumley in the final minutes helped the Oles avoid a last second defeat.
Overtime also went by with scoring opportunities for both squads but neither could take advantage to win the game in sudden death.
St. Olaf returns to the field this Sunday for a non-conference matchup with Luther College. The game will begin at 1 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field. The St. Olaf men's team will take the field for a game of their own against the Norse at the conclusion of the women's game.
