ST. PAUL, Minn. - The St. Olaf volleyball team opened its MIAC league schedule on the right foot by defeating the College of St. Catherine 3-1 on Wednesday night at the Butler Center.

After dropping the first set, the Oles used a balanced attack to win the match 18-25, 25-23, 25-13, 25-22.

Five Oles factored in with seven or more kills on the night. Kelly Heissel and Maggie Prunty led the way with 14 and 12 kills respectively. First year Sophie Schwartz led all attackers by hitting .636, with seven kills and no errors on 11 attempts.

Errors were a issue for both teams, as the teams racked up 26. The Oles' 50-36 advantage in kills helped propel them to victory. 11 of the Oles' 26 errors came in the first set as St. Olaf coughed up a 15-9 lead to drop the first set.

The Oles bounced back, winning a tight second set before routing St. Kate's 25-13 in the third.

The two teams traded the lead eight times in the fourth set before St. Olaf pulled away with a 5-1 run late to clinch the match.

The Oles (6-7, 1-0 MIAC), winners of two straight, travel to Hamline on Saturday before kicking off a three-game home stand on Sept. 25 against Augsburg.
