Cardinals get a pair of power play goals in third to upend Ole men

BLAINE, Minn. - Saint Mary's University scored a pair of power play goals in the final seven-plus minutes of regulation to upend St. Olaf 3-2 in a non-conference men's hockey game on Sunday afternoon at Fogerty Arena.
SMU struck first, but the Oles had goals from Marc Richards and Matt Geurts in a stretch of 3:41 between the end of the second and beginning of the third to take a 2-1 lead.
The Cardinals then had goals from Bobby Thompson at 12:57 and Martin Gruse at 17:22 to retake the lead. Gruse and Thompson also added assists in the win for SMU (1-1-0).
St. Olaf had a 38-30 advantage in shots, including a 28-16 mark over the first two periods. SMU goaltender Christian Gaffy made 36 saves while Ole netminder Steve Papciak had 27.
The Oles had four power play opportunities in the first period, but did not capitalize. St. Olaf was 1-for-7 with an extra skater on the afternoon while SMU went 2-for-5.
