Men's hockey drops Johnnies in conference opener

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The St. Olaf men's hockey team (1-4-0, 1-0-0 MIAC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period to defeat St. John's University (2-3-0, 0-1-0 MIAC)in both teams MIAC opener. Sophomore David Rath opened the scoring 3 minutes into the first period. Senior Dan Cecka followed up with another Ole goal five minutes later. The Oles generated several scoring chances throughout the rest of the game, but held strong defensively to keep the Johnnies off the scoreboard.

Junior Steve Papciak started in goal for the Oles and recorded 20 saves in the shutout win. The shutout was Papciak's first of the year and the win was the first for the Oles this season.

The Oles will travel to St. Cloud for the second game of the weekend against St. John's on Saturday night at 7p.m.
