Ole men shoot past Eagles in final non-league test

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Sterling Nielsen had 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting as visiting St. Olaf posted a 72-45 men's basketball win over the University of Northwestern on Saturday night at the Ericksen Center.
The Oles (3-2, 0-0 MIAC) shot a blistering 57.1 percent from the floor in the first half to take a 38-18 lead to the break. St. Olaf, playing its final non-conference game, led by as many as 30. Nielsen added five rebounds and four assists.
Connor Gunderson added 13 points and eight rebounds and Riley Aeikens eight points for the Oles. Northwestern had 10 points each from Eric Witthus and Blak Van Maanen.
St. Olaf raced to a 15-4 lead and never trailed. Northwestern made a dent in the advantage, cutting it to five at 23-18 with 8:41 left in the first half. The Oles, however, then held the Eagles scoreless over the next nine minutes on a 15-0 run.
St. Olaf opens its MIAC schedule on Tuesday with Carleton College at home at 7:45 p.m.
