Oles overpower Cardinals in 83-53 rout

WINONA, Minn. - A balanced offensive attack led the St. Olaf men's basketball team to a comfortable 83-53 road victory against Saint Mary's University at SMU Gym on Monday night in a MIAC affair.

Led by the play of seniors Connor Gunderson and Charlie Aslesen, the Oles shot 55.2% total from the floor, including 60% in the second half. Gunderson led all players with 18 points, going a torrid 8-for-11 from the floor while adding eight rebounds. Aslesen chipped in 14 points and four assists.

St. Olaf had a steady control on the game from the outset, establishing an 8-0 lead before the Cardinals were able to get on the board. The Oles held a 35-17 lead at the half.

Even with their lead, St. Olaf kept pressing in the second, never allowing Saint Mary's to come within an 18-point margin. The Ole lead was bolstered further thanks to a 16-2 run in the middle stages of the half.

Aaron Romportl paced the Cardinals (1-6, 0-3 MIAC)with 12 points and six rebounds, while Evan Pederson and Will Swiggum followed close behind with ten points each.

The win improves the Ole's MIAC record to 2-1 (5-3 Overall) as they enter the holiday break. St. Olaf kicks off 2014 by playing three of their next four at Skoglund Center, beginning on Jan. 4 when Gustavus comes to Northfield.
