January 11, 2014
NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Connor Gunderson had 22 points and nine rebounds and Sterling Neilsen tallied 23 points and five assists to lead the St. Olaf men's basketball team over Saint John's University 94-89 in MIAC men's basketball outing on Saturday afternoon at Skoglund Center.
St. Olaf (8-4, 5-2 MIAC) was able to overcome SJU's (5-6, 3-3 MIAC) 54.5 percent 3-point field-goal percentage en route to the victory. St. Olaf trailed 40-37 at the half but a four-point play by Sam Daley to begin the second half gave the Oles the boost they needed to begin the second half. The two teams went back-and-forth for the remainder of the half and had the game knotted at 82-82 with 3:21 remaining.
St. Olaf then went on a 10-3 run that forced the Johnnies to foul to stop the clock, and Neilsen went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to close the game and give the Oles their fifth MIAC win.
St. Olaf shot a whopping 60 percent from the floor to give them their highest point total on the season. Gunderson was 9-of-10 from the floor, Neilsen was 9-of-13 and Justin Pahl was 3-of-5, including 2-of-4 from 3-point land.
Alex Schmidt came off the bench to lead the Johnnies with 20 points. Patrick Butcher added 17 and Blake Maslonkowski tallied 15 more.
The Oles will continue their schedule on Wednesday evening when they travel to Macalester College (2-10, 1-6 MIAC) for a 7:30 p.m. game.
