COLERAINE, Minn. - The St. Olaf women's Nordic ski team competed against regional opponents over a weekend of racing at Mt. Itasca.
Senior Paige Schember (left) finished in sixth place in Friday's 5-kilometer individual start classic race to lead the Oles, only 14 seconds behind race winner Sarah Allen of St. Scholastica.
Improving over her finishes last weekend, sophomore Nora Gilbertson finished 17th in the field of 46th. Senior Gretchen Mueller was the Oles' third scoring skier, finishing 34th, while senior Kelsey Cork finished close behind in 36th.
Saturday's 5-kilometer individual start freestyle race brought bitter cold and another 6th place finish for Schember. Showing impressive consistency over the past two weekends, Schember finished 50 seconds behind winner Alice Flanders of Michigan Tech.
St. Olaf's second skier on the day was again Nora Gilbertson, finishing 20th, while Kelsey Cork finished 32nd to complete the Oles' scoring team. First year Josephine Brekke finished close behind in 35th, and Gretchen Mueller finished 37th. Junior (U20) skiers Allie Aufderhide and Mikki Hartman-Mattson finished in 44th and 46th, respectively in the field of 51.
Gilbertson, Brekke, Aufderhide, and Hartman-Mattson stayed for an extra day to compete in Sunday's junior division 1.4 kilometer classical sprint race. Gilbertson and Brekke both qualified for quarterfinal knockout heats. After advancing to the consolation final in both of her previous sprint races this year, Gilbertson finally broke through to the A final, ultimately finishing fourth on the day and second in her age class.
The Oles' next competition is hosted by Northern Michigan University in Ishpeming, Mich., on Feb. 8-9.
