ISHPEMING, Mich. - Jake Brown finished fifth to lead the St. Olaf men's nordic ski team on the second day of the CCSA Championships in Ishpeming, Mich. on Sunday.
Brown completed the 20K competition in 40:29.6, less than three second behind the fourth place finisher. Only 6.2 seconds separated the top five positions.
On a lightning-fast 5 kilometer loop, Junior Jake Brown was the Oles' top scorer in Saturday's 10-kilometer individual start classic race, finishing 22nd in a time of 22:27.7, 2:10 behind race winner Logan Hanneman of Alaska-Fairbanks. Sophomore Evan Kendall was only 17 seconds behind Brown, placing 28th. Sophomore Liam John was St. Olaf's final scoring skier, finishing 34th, while Nels Thompson finished 39th.
Liam John was 28th on day two with a finishing time of 44:00.2. Kendall placed 32nd 44:12.3.
Sunday's 20 kilometer kilometer mass start freestyle race featured a high pace from the gun, bringing finishing times down near 40 minutes. Brown put in a strong move on one of the courses large climbs on the third of four laps. The effort was not enough to drop his competitors in the lead pack of five, however, and Brown ultimately placed 5th in a sprint finish, six seconds behind race winner Hanneman.
St. Olaf's second skier on the day was Liam John, finishing 28th, while Kendall finished 32nd to complete the Oles' scoring team. Nels Thompson finished 43rd.
The Oles race next at the NCAA Central Region Championships, hosted by Michigan Tech University, February 15-16.
