NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The St. Olaf men's basketball team proved too much for Macalester on Wednesday evening as they overpowered the Scots 78-54 at Skoglund Center.

Playing in their final home regular season game, the Oles started five seniors to honor those members of the team that will graduate at the conclusion of the season.

"It was a an honor to be able to start tonight, especially with this group of guys," said senior center Nick Hanson. "Tonight is a memory that I will always cherish, because of all the hard work we have put in together over the last four years."

Nathan Kuck, Connor Gunderson and Hanson led the way for St. Olaf by scoring 12, 11 and 10 points respectively. Hanson also added four rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

"There is a special bond among the players on this team, especially the seniors," said Hanson. "And it's more than just being friends off the court, because it really shows in the chemistry that we have on the court."

The Oles led 17-7 eight minutes into the game and their lead never dipped below ten after that point. Charlie Aslesen highlighted the scoring late in the first half with two commanding dunks in a row to help his team take a 41-22 lead into the half.

The Ole offense was hot again, shooting 63 percent from the field and 45 percent from behind the arc while holding the Scots to 34 percent shooting.

"Our defense has been the key to our success this season," said Hanson. "Our mindset every game is to make the other team uncomfortable and disrupt what they are trying to do."

The Oles will try to cap off their regular season with a victory against Bethel on Saturday afternoon. The game will begin at 3 p.m. in Arden Hills.

"I'm so proud of how our guys responded the last two games after the tough loss last week," said Hanson. "We need to build on these past two wins and keep the momentum going on Saturday against Bethel. They are a tough team, a playoff team. It should be a fun one."

St. Olaf is also guaranteed to host a playoff game on Friday, February 28 at 7:30 p.m. The opponent will be decided in a quarterfinal matchup that will be played on Wednesday the 26th.
