Elmer, Roach and Gibson qualify for NCAA Wrestling Championships

MINNEAPOLIS - St. Olaf posted three NCAA Division III Championship qualifiers -- Carl Elmer (157), James Roach (174) and Zach Gibson (285) -- as the Ole wrestling team competed at the NCAA Division III West Region Championships on Saturday at Augsburg College.
Elmer needed four straight wins in the consolation bracket to finish third. He won his opener 8-0, but then dropped a 7-4 decision in the quarterfinals. He then picked up a pin at 4:19, major decision, an injury forfeit and a pin at 6:07 in the third place match.
Roach (25-5) was runner up at 174. He lost a 6-5 decision in the championship bout to UW-Oshkosh's Dan Schiferl after he cruised to victories in his first three matches with a pin, major decision and a 7-2 win in the semifinals.
Gibson won his first two bouts before losing by fall in the semifinals. He rebounded with a 6-4 decision to get to the fourth place match.
St. Olaf was eighth in the 12-team regional.
The trio of qualifiers will compete in the NCAA Division III Championships March 15-16 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
