Ole women top Luther
March 4, 2014
OWATONNA, Minn. - After being forced into a two week hiatus by inclement weather that caused their match with Gustavus Adolphus to be postponed, the St. Olaf women's tennis team responded with a 6-3 victory over Luther College on Saturday afternoon at the Owatonna Tennis Center.
After opening their season by blanking Bethel 9-0 more than two weeks previously, the Oles showed little rust as they took on the Norse. Luther did begin the match by taking two out of three doubles matches, but the Ole singles players proved too strong and responded by taking five-of-six singles matches.
In doubles, Lisa Hall and Maya MacGibbon found themselves in a 6-3 hole at the first position before winning four straight games. Their opponents, Lola White-Baer and Maggie Helms, responded with a break and a hold to put the Norse up 8-7, but MacGibbon held her serve to force the match into a tiebreaker, where she and Hall prevailed 7-4.
In singles play, Kristi Kroker and Lizzie Carlson both had exciting matches at the second and sixth spots respectively. After being downed 6-2 in the first set, Kroker found herself down 4-3 in the second, but fought back to win three straight games to take the second set. Kroker then finished the 10-point tiebreaker with ease, by defeating Helms 10-4. Meanwhile, Carlson also found herself down a set, but rebounded with a 6-1 second set victory over Luther first-year Addy Riley. Carlson then ground out the third set tiebreaker 10-6 to seal the victory.
St. Olaf will play a rare weekday afternoon match this Friday against the University of St. Thomas. The match will be played at the Baseline Tennis Center on the University of Minnesota campus at 1:30 p.m.
