Baseball sweeps Concordia to open league play

MOORHEAD, Minn. - St. Olaf won game one 7-2 behind a complete game effort from Ryan Tapani and Jack Schechinger homered twice in a 9-8 game two win as St. Olaf swept a MIAC baseball doubleheader from Concordia College-Moorhead.
Game One: St. Olaf 7, Concordia 2
Ryan Tapani scattered seven hits over a complete game victory as the Oles struck for three in the first inning and never trailed.
Jake Mathison was 3-for-4 with two runs and Sam Maus 2-for-4 with two runs and an RBI in the victory.
Tim Carlson was 2-for-3 with a seventh inning homer for the Cobbers.
Game Two: St. Olaf 8, Concordia 8
Jack Schechinger homered twice, including a go-ahead homer in the top of the eighth as St. Olaf held off Concordia 9-8 in game two.
Trailing 8-5, the Cobbers loaded the bases with one out in the seventh and had a three-run by Jordan Domine to tie the game at 8-8.
Nick Kulla had a bases-clearing three-run double in the Oles' five-run sixth inning as St. Olaf took an 8-5 lead. Jack Schechinger followed Kulla's double with a homerun to give the Oles a three-run lead. Kulla was 3-for-5 and Tapani 4-for-5 with two runs. Tim Maus, who started on the mound, had two hits.
Maus went 4 1/3 innings, giving up five earned runs before being replaced by Nate Marshall. Marshall was spelled by Joey Voss in the bottom of the seventh. Voss earned the win, working out of a jam in the bottom of the eighth as St. Olaf preserved the 9-8 victory.
