Ole softball gets swept, shut out against Luther

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The St. Olaf softball team were outscored 23-0 and outhit 22-5 as visiting Luther College swept a Sunday afternoon doubleheader 10-0 and 13-0 at Mabel Shirley Field.

Game One: Luther 10, St. Olaf 0 (5 innings)

A six-run third inning broke open a 2-0 lead for the Norse, an edge they were able to add two more to over the last two innings in a 10-0 game one victory.

Alise Miller and Miranda McCay each belted a three-run home run in the third, McCay finished 2-for-3 with four RBIs.

Becca Girvan earned the win on the mound for Luther, pitching four complete innings while giving up two hits and striking out five.

Natalie Mironov gets the loss for the Oles, going the distance giving up 11 hits and nine earned runs.

Game Two: Luther 13, St. Olaf 0 (5 innings)

Luther's momentum carried into game two where they jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and cruised to a 13-0 win, earning the non-conference sweep.

A lopsided fifth inning saw the Norse put up seven runs on three hits to cap off the game. The Ole defense struggled in the frame, committing two errors, hitting two batters and throwing two wild pitches.

McCay notched another four RBIs for the Norse, batting 3-for-4. Carri Radil and Paige Cobdell each went 2-for-3 at the plate to round out the Luther offense.

Topanga Skiles tallies the win, tossing three and two-thirds innings giving up three hits and striking out four. Annie Versnik finished the game picking up the save, pitching one and one-third innings of hitless ball striking out one.

Abbey Smith takes the loss for St. Olaf, throwing four and two-thirds innings scattering eight hits, giving up seven earned runs and striking out one.

The Oles fall to 3-17 on the season and hit the road for a Tuesday doubleheader at Concordia-Moorhead before returning to Mabel Shirley Field on Thursday when they take on Carleton College.
