McDonald reaches 500 as pitching staff leads Oles to 2-0 and 9-1 sweep of Gusties

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - Jake Mathison tossed a two-hit shutout in a 2-0 game one victory and St. Olaf completed a MIAC baseball sweep of Gustavus with a 9-1 win in in game two on Tuesday afternoon at Mark Almli Field.
The Oles' game two victory gave head coach Matt McDonald his 500th career win. Under McDonald St. Olaf has won a combined seven MIAC titles, four regular season and three MIAC Playoff championships.
Game One: St. Olaf 2, Gustavus 0
Mathison struck out three, walked none and cruised to the victory in 85 minutes without allowing a Gustie into scoring position. Tim Maus was 2-for-3 for the Oles.
Mathison gave up a leadoff single in the fifth, but induced a pair of fly outs and a strike out.
St. Olaf scored in the second and third innings. Jack Schechinger doubled to lead off the second and was plated by a Dylan Porter single later in the inning. Chris Paradise doubled to lead off the third before Sam Maus drove him in with a base hit.
Game Two: St. Olaf 9, Gustavus 1
John Connell worked five innings and Trent Friedrich the final four scoreless as St. Olaf completed the sweep with a 9-1 win.
Nick Denn was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI while Sam and Tim Maus drove in two each. The Oles broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the fourth and added two in the sixth.
Scott Benjamin and Garret Fuchs had two hits each for the Gusties (5-13, 2-8 MIAC).
St. Olaf (17-9, 8-2 MIAC) has won six of its last seven and nine of its last 11.
The Oles visit No. 13 St. Thomas, winners of 10 in a row, tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
