Volleyball splits final two at Border Battle, Otteman gets 999th kill

Andrea Otteman recorded her 999th career kill as St. Olaf volleyball team split a pair of five-game matches to close the Border Battle tournament Saturday in St. Peter, Minn.

Otteman had 14 kills in the third-round win over Luther College and 17 in a final-round loss to Simpson College.

St. Olaf finished 2-2 in the tournament, which featured the fifth- through eighth-place finishers from the Iowa Intercollegiate Conference and the Minnesota Intercollegiate Conference in 2002.

Audrey Volstad (Jr., Hanley Falls, Minn./YME) was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 11.35 assists a game.

All four of the Oles' matches went five games.

St. Olaf defeated Luther 24-30, 30-26, 26-30, 30-13, 15-12 to open the day. Christine Brook (Fy, Centennial, Colo./Cherry Creek) had a team-high 17 kills and Ashley Dennis (Jr., Billings, Mont.) 19 digs to lead the Oles. Otteman added 17 digs, Jessica Levin (Fy, Cedar Rapids, Iowa/Xavier) 13 kills and Danica Finseth (Sr., Chatfield, Minn.) 12. Volstad had ten kills and 53 set assists.

Luther was led by Katie Hopp's (Belmond, Iowa/Belmond-Klemme) 15 kills.

In game two, Jessica Martin's (Toledo, Iowa/South Tama) 22 kills led Simpson College to a 30-32, 30-27, 30-28, 22-30 and 15-10 win over St. Olaf.

The Oles (4-2 MIAC, 11-7 overall) were led by Otteman and Finseth, who had 17 kills each.

St. Olaf returns to MIAC play Wednesday when they host the College of St. Catherine at 7 p.m.
