For the second time in as many games the St. Olaf volleyball team, within a point of clinching an MIAC playoff berth, lost a five-game thriller.

Saint Mary's defeated the Oles 30-27, 28-30, 23-30, 30-23 and 19-17 Wednesday night at Skoglund Center in Northfield, Minn.

Concordia-Moorhead defeated the Oles in five on Saturday in Moorhead.

The Oles (12-9, 5-4 MIAC) had four consecutive serves in the deciding game five with a chance to down the Cards, and get to the postseason for the first time since 2002.

Andrea Otteman (Jr., Ames, Iowa) had 20 kills and 21 digs, and Audrey Volstad (Jr., Hanley Falls, Minn./YME) had 65 set assists and seven kills in eight attempts to lead St. Olaf.

Megan Roesler (Jr., St. Paul, Minn./Cretin) had a team-high 21 kills for the Cardinals.

Saint Mary's hit .425 and .393 in the final two games.

Ashley Dennis (Jr., Billings, Mont.) added 19 kills and 19 digs in the loss for the Oles.

St. Olaf now needs to win one of their final two matches or have Saint Mary's lose one of their final two to clinch a spot in the six-team MIAC playoffs.

The Oles play at Saint Ben's Saturday and Carleton on Wednesday.

Saint Mary's plays at Carleton Friday and Gustavus on Wednesday.
