Men's Cross Country
- The St. Olaf men's cross country team was idle last weekend after running in the its alumni race on Aug. 30... The Oles' Doboul Ruon won that race in 15:58 against a field of current and past Oles and a few members of the University of Minnesota's team.
- St. Olaf is under first year head coach Phil Lundin, who was the men's indoor and outdoor track and field coach at Minnesota for 13 years... Lundin was a four-time Big Ten Coach of the Year and was the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Assocition Division I Coach of the Year in 2003 after leading the Golden Gophers to seventh and ninth place finishes at the NCAA Division I indoor and outdoor championships... Lundin took over for Bill Thornton, who retired last spring after more than three decades of service at St. Olaf.
- The Oles will run this weekend at the Les Duke Invitational in Grinnell, Iowa.
Women's Cross Country
- St. Olaf was idle last weekend... The Oles ran their annual alumnae 5k on Aug. 30... Senior Annie Knutson (19:49) and sophomore Abby Smith (20:20) were the Oles' top finishers.
- The Oles are coming off their 16th NCAA appearance in school history, which ranks eighth among Division III schools.
- St. Olaf runs in the Les Duke Invitational on Saturday in Grinnell, Iowa.
Football
- St. Olaf, under first year head coach Jerry Olszewski, opened 2008 with a 23-14 win at Luther College on Saturday... Coty Watkins rushed for 105 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries to lead the Oles, who held Luther to one first down in the first half.
- The victory was the fourth in the last five for St. Olaf head coaches making their debut and the fifth straight against Luther.
- St. Olaf hosts Pacific Lutheran on Saturday in a home-and-home series over the 2008 and 2009 seasons... The game can be seen live on the St. Olaf Athletics Website or heard on 920 AM KDHL or at the St. Olaf Athletics Website.
Men's Golf
- The St. Olaf men's golf team finished seventh at the Augsburg Invitational at Oakdale Golf Club and Crow River Golf Course this weekend in Hutchinson, Minn... Chris Conklin and Mack Traynor each fired two-day 156's (+13, t 21st) while Billy Utter shot a 157 (+14, t 23rd).
- The Oles compete next at the Saint John's Invitational at Greystone Golf Club and Blackberry Ridge Country Clue this weekend.
Women's Golf
- The St. Olaf women's golf team finished fourth at the 17-team Concordia Invitational on Sunday, led by Britta Hendrickson's 11th place effort... Hendrickson shot an 82 on Saturday and an 83 on Sunday... Lizzy Zahn and Alyssa Zuehl shot two-day 178's while Vanessa Kleckner and Emily Segar collected 179's.
- The Oles were sixth in the eight-team Cobber Invite on Friday... Segar led the team shooting an 87.
- St. Olaf competes in the Midwest Classic at Majestic Oaks Golf Course this weekend in Ham Lake, Minn.
Men's Soccer
- The St. Olaf men's soccer team extended its winning streak to three with a 1-0 win over Northwestern College on Saturday... Scott Crider picked up the game-winner on an assist from John Zietlow.
- Zietlow scored all three goals, including the overtime winner, in the Oles' 3-2 win at Luther on Wednesday... Zietlow has a team-best 12 points (five goals, two assists) and has had at least one point in each of the Oles' four games.
- St. Olaf hosts Saint Mary's University on Saturday in the MIAC opener for each school.
Women's Soccer
- The St. Olaf women's soccer team moved to 3-0-0 with a 3-1 win at Luther College on Wednesday... First year Catie Christoffel had two goals for the Oles, who have already outdone their offensive output from 2007 (18 goals in 2008, 15 in 2007).
- Fourteen of the team's 18 goals have come from first years - Christoffel (4), Ellie Steiner (4), Lindsay Howard (4), Deanne Schmidt (1) and Christina Herron-Sweet (1).
- St. Olaf faces Wis.-Eau Claire on Wednesday in Eau Claire... The Oles begin conference play on Saturday with a match at Saint Mary's University.
Volleyball
- The St. Olaf volleyball team improved to 8-0 with a four-game sweep at the Wis.-River Falls Invitational this weekend... The Oles defeated three MIAC foes in the event - St. Catherine, Hamline and Bethel.
- The Oles' Kim Smisek and Jess Levin were named to the tournament's all-tournament team... Smisek averaged 17.75 kills in the team's four victories, including a season-best 24 in a five-set win over Hamline on Saturday... Levin had 15 in the Friday win over Bethany Lutheran and 17 in each match on Saturday.
- Levin was named the MIAC's Co-Hitter of the Week for her performance over the weekend.
- The Oles 8-0 start is their first since the 2001 squad started 13-0... St. Olaf plays at the College of Saint Benedict Invitational this weekend in St. Joseph, Minn.
