Men's Basketball
- The St. Olaf men's basketball team (1-0, 0-0 MIAC) opened its 2008-09 season with a 94-76 win over Bethany Lutheran College on Saturday... First years Bobby Fong, Mark Wieloch and Alfie Jaryan had 18, 17 and 13 points to lead the Oles, who won their season opener for the first time since 2004-05.

- The Oles' 94 points were the most since Dec. 13, 1997, a 100-80 win at Saint John's.

- St. Olaf opens MIAC play at Hamline University on Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. The team then plays at 2007-08 NCAA Tournament team Buena Vista University on Friday at 7 p.m.

Women's Basketball
- The St. Olaf women's basketball team opens its season on Tuesday at Hamline University... The Oles were 8-17 and 7-15 in league play under then first-year head coach Dave Stromme... Stromme has three of his five starters back, including All-MIAC post player Elyse Erickson back this winter.

Men's Cross Country
- The St. Olaf men's cross country team received an at large bid to this weekend's NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships, it was announced on Sunday, after the team finished third at Saturday's Central Regional... The race will run on Saturday at 11 a.m. at L.S. Ayres Complex in Hanover, Ind.

- The Oles won the MIAC Championships on Nov. 1 behind the league's individual champion Dubuol Ruon, who was eighth at the regional on Saturday.

- The NCAA appearance is the ninth in school history and the third since 2002.

Women's Cross Country
- St. Olaf senior Jenna Carlson earned a spot in the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships with her 11th place run at the Central Regional on Saturday... Saturday's race will run at 12 p.m. at the L.S. Ayres Complex in Hanover, Ind.

- Carlson was one of 56 individuals who earned their way to the championships. The first seven athletes from each region who are not a part of a qualifying team, were selected to participate.

- St. Olaf was eighth at the regional, helped Carlson and fellow all-region runner Annie Knutson, who finished 15th in the race.

Football
- Coty Watkins rushed for 194 yards and two touchdowns to lead St. Olaf (6-4, 4-4 MIAC) to a 31-10 football win over host Hamline University on Saturday to wrap up the 2008 season... Watkins scored on rushes of five and 30 yards for the Oles (6-4, 4-4 MIAC), who jumped to a 21-3 lead.

- In two seasons at St. Olaf, after transferring from UW-Stout, Watkins rushed for 1,527 yards (13th all-time at St. Olaf) and 23 touchdowns (fourth all-time).

- Evan Endsley had two catches for 12 yards in Saturday's win to finish with 40 for the season... His 126 career receptions rank sixth all-time at St. Olaf, his 1,411 yards seventh and his 11 receiving touchdowns rank eighth.

- The Oles' 6-4 season gives the program a 37-13 record since 2004.

Men's Hockey
- The St. Olaf men's hockey team (4-2-0, 2-0-0 MIAC) swept Saint John's 4-3 and 2-1 this weekend to open the 2008-09 MIAC schedule 2-0 for the first time since 1995-96... The team's 4-2-0 start overall is the best since the 1998-99 team began the winter 5-2-0.

- The Oles overcame a 3-1 deficit on Friday with three third period goals... Dylan Mueller scored twice for the Oles, including the game-tying score with 7:44 left... Roger Trousdale added the game-winner 28 seconds later, on a feed from Isak Travik, to give St. Olaf a 4-3 advantage.

- On Saturday, St. Olaf sophomore Isak Tranvik scored on a power play at the 7:14 mark in the third period to tie the game 1-1 and Nick Stalock had the go-ahead tally on an assist from Sam Windsor and Roger Truesdale... Goaltender Ben Leis had 34 saves on the afternoon for St. Olaf to earn the win.

- St. Olaf plays a home-and-home with Gustavus this weekend - on Friday at Northfield Ice Arena and on Saturday in Mankato, Minn.

Women's Hockey
- The St. Olaf women's hockey team (1-2-1, 1-1-0 MIAC) split its MIAC opening weekend with the College of Saint Benedict, winning on Friday in St. Cloud 6-2 before dropping a 2-1 game at Northfield Ice Arena on Saturday.

- Kristen Latta scored twice to lead St. Olaf to an MIAC-opening 6-2 win over host College of Saint Benedict on Friday night... Lauren Tomford added three assists in the win.

- Anna Messerly scored the Oles' goal in Saturday's loss, at the 5:49 mark of the first... Jess Ptachick made 23 saves for St. Olaf in net, but took the loss.

- St. Olaf plays a home-and-home with Gustavus Adolphus College. The teams meet in New Ulm on Friday and at Northfield Ice Arena on Saturday.

Men's Swimming and Diving
- The St. Olaf men's swimming and diving team defeated fellow MIAC power Gustavus Adolphus College 181-119 Saturday afternoon at Skoglund Natatorium... Gustavus and St. Olaf have won every MIAC Championship since 1979-80... The Oles have won 22 (1980-98, 2001, 2007) and Gustavus seven (2000, 2002-06, 2008).

- Leading the Oles was Jake Koch with first place finishes in the 50, 100, and 200 yard freestyle races. Koch was also part of the 400 free relay, along with Kaegan Recher, Brock Edwards, and Nelson Westby that took first with a time of 3:11.71.

- Westby, who was fifth in the 100 breast (55.94) at Friday's USA Swimming Grand Prix at the University of Minnesota, had first place finishes in the 100 yard and 200 yard breaststroke races, along with the 200 yard medley relay team that won with a time of 1:35.04. Swimming with Westby in the relay were Adam Meyer, Luke Money, and Edwards.

- Chris Bateman had two wins - in the 200 yard IM and 500 yard freestyle races. Bateman also finished second in the 100 yard breast.

- Meyer also swept the 100 and 200 yard backstroke races, finishing first in both.

- Leading the Ole divers were Ian Straehly and Ryan Trostrud finishing first and second.

Women's Swimming and Diving
- The St. Olaf women's swimming and diving team defeated Gustavus Adolphus College 148-146 Saturday afternoon at Skoglund Natatorium in a battle of MIAC powers.

- Lauren Snyder swept the 50 yard, 100 yard, and 200 yard freestyle races, winning all events. Snyder was also part of the winning 400 free relay team with Katie Kubat, Jessie Gibbons, and Kjersten Grinde that took first place.

- The 200 yard medley team of Alli Beardsley, Grinde, Amanda Rorem, and Kubat took first place with a time of 1:53.68.

- Beardsley had two more first place finishes - 200 IM and the 500 free - while Grinde also had a first place performance in the 100 breast and a second place swim in the 200 breast.

- Other individual wins came from Kubat in the 200 backstroke, Lindsay Hickman in the 100 backstroke, and Christine Bruno in the 1000 free.

Wrestling
- The St. Olaf wrestling team opens its 2008-09 season on Thursday with a match against Concordia College-Moorhead.

- It's been an eventful fall for St. Olaf head coach Sean Ahrar, who joined the US Navy Reserves earlier this month... Ahrar was commissioned in a ceremony on Nov. 9 at the Metrodome prior to the Vikings-Packers game.
