Greetings from the St. Olaf Registrar’s Office and Academic Advising Center!
We are already planning for your fall registration and we need your help. During your first year at St. Olaf, you are required to take two courses that will prepare you for other college work. These courses are General Education 111: First Year Writing and Religion 121: Bible, Culture and Community. Students are randomly assigned to take either Religion or Writing during fall semester and will complete the other course in spring semester.

  • You will be pre-registered into a section of General Education 111 or Religion 121 based on the choices you submit to us this summer.
  • Starting on Monday, June 16, 2008 course descriptions for fall semester General Education 111 and Religion 121 will be available on the Web. Deadline to submit your section choices are July 15, 2008.
  • You will receive an email message in your St. Olaf email on Monday, June 16th announcing that fall semester course descriptions are available.
  • Please do not submit your section choices before June 16th, as you may be accessing “old” course information. Fall semester course descriptions cannot be ready and posted online until mid-June.
  • New transfer students needing to complete First Year Writing (FYW) or Biblical Studies (BTS-B) general education requirements must submit section choices for GE 111 and Religion 121.
After receiving the announcement that descriptions are available:
  • Review the course descriptions carefully and select five sections of interest to you in both GE 111 and Religion 121. Having your choices for both Religion and Writing will assist us in placing you into a section of your choice. You will be registered into either Religion or Writing.
  • Submit your section choices using the online course preference form. Links to the course descriptions and online registration form will be provided in the email message received on June 16th.
  • If you do not have access to a computer for email and online information, please call Cheryl LaCroix at 507-786-6797 to have pre-registration materials sent to you.

Please note: Although you are being asked to submit section choices for both General Education 111 and Religion 121, you will be pre-registered into only one of these courses for fall semester. When it is time to pre-register for spring semester Religion and Writing courses (in October 2008), you will have a new set of course descriptions to review and submit choices from.

The online course preference form must be submitted by July 15, 2008 to have your choices considered. Please pay particular attention to this due date. If your section choices are not received by July 15, you will be pre-registered into a section with available space.

For students accepted into The Great Conversation or American Conversations, the following pre-registration procedures apply:

  • Students accepted into The Great Conversation program will be pre-registered for a section of Great Conversation for each term and do not pre-register in General Education 111 or Religion 121. First Year Writing (General Education 111) and Bible, Culture and Community (Religion 121) credits are satisfied upon completion of Great Conversation 113, 115, and 116 (the first year). Great Conversation students do not need to submit the online pre-registration form.
  • Students accepted into American Conversations will be pre-registered in American Conversations 101 in fall semester and American Conversations 102 in spring semester. In addition to enrolling in the American Conversation courses, students must take Religion 121 in either fall or spring semester. Space availability in Religion will determine how many American Con students will take Religion in fall or spring. All students accepted into American Conversation must submit section choices for Religion 121 using the online registration form.
